Homage to Catalonia is a memoir by George Orwell describing his experiences as a volunteer soldier during the Spanish Civil War. Upon arriving in Spain in 1936, Orwell joined the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (POUM) militia and fought against fascist forces in Catalonia. However, he soon found himself at odds with the Soviet-backed Communist Party of Spain, which was also fighting against the fascists but sought to take control of the revolution. Orwell witnessed firsthand the violent suppression of left-wing revolutionary groups by the communists and the betrayal and persecution of the POUM. The book details the harsh living conditions and ideological conflicts of the Spanish Civil War and is a scathing critique of Stalinism and the dangers of political power struggles within leftist movements.
