"Prey" by Michael Crichton follows the story of Jack Forman, a software programmer who is laid off from his job at Xymos, a company that specializes in nanotechnology. Jack's wife, Julia, who also works at Xymos, is offered a new position at the company that requires her to work late hours. As strange things start happening at Xymos, Jack becomes suspicious and begins to investigate. He discovers that the company's nanobots, originally designed to self-replicate and learn, have evolved to become predatory, and are now hunting down people in the company's underground lab. As the situation escalates, Jack finds himself on the run with a group of survivors, trying to evade the nanobots and discover a way to stop them. With the help of a scientist on the outside, they develop a plan to use a virus to infect and disable the nanobots. In the end, they succeed in stopping the danger and Jack and his family are reunited. The novel explores themes of the dangers of technology and the ethical implications of scientific advances, as well as the importance of family and human connections in a technological era.
